I think that there should be a special area on HTML Dynamic HTML and Java/Javascript for kids who want to get in touch with Web page programming. Other types of programming are cool, but for now you should stick to just WEB programming.

JenJam12@aol.com
I think we should make a section called Tech Run or Tech World or something that talks about all the new little gadgets and things that are here now and meant for the near future. We can find out about all these weird, cool , and wacky inventions or gadgets.

WolfKNT16@aol.com
I think you should have a question and answer section in your newsletter about computers and AOL.

Hello there! We currently have a whole area in Youth Tech devoted to this called Tech Stuff. You can access this at keyword: YT. Enjoy!

From last week's article "U and Your Parents."
by ytccbrain@aol.com
..........................................................................................

Last week we asked you to take a poll on whether or not YOU thought that parents had to much control of you while online. Here were a few of the responses that were posted:

Submitted by OEL1234392@aol.com:

Most parents that set parental controls think that their kids will try to meet someone online, go to inappropriate websites, etc. I realize that some kids will try those things, but not all of them. When parents see all these dangerous things on the Net, of course, they get scared. Because of this, they try to protect their children by blocking certain things. Some parents that set parental controls don't realize that their kids can make the right decision by not getting involoved with the wrong people. Unfortunately, most parents set up the parental controls, anyway. Personally, I don't like parental controls because they block me from doing things that have almost no wrong doing in them. For example, if some 30 year old guy sent me an IM asking what I looked like, I would ignore it. If someone asked me to go to an inappropriate website, I would ignore them and report them. Since I proved to my parents that I know what and what not to do online, I'm not under parental controls anymore. If you haven't guessed already, my point is that if parents really want their kids to be safe online, they should teach them how to handle situations instead of covering them up. Using parental controls to protect your children is just like hiding behind a brick wall for safety. Like the wall, parental controls won't always be there. The only true way to be safe online is to know how to handle situations yourself.

Guys, guys, guys. This is what parents do, they wanna make sure you are interactive with all different things, not just interactive with the computer. Deal with them! I do.

Ok, most parents are wary of the internet.. That's no hidden fact. And they *do* have that right. There is so much out there that their children could get into. But, I believe that if your child is at least 12, you should start out with NOT giving them limitations. Monitor them for a short while, but don't pry, and don't constantly look over their shoulder, and above all, do NOT sneak into their email or files. Why give proof that you don't trust them? If you see your kid doing something that you find objective, talk to them about it, but don't automatically slap down the parental controls and close the lines of comunication. That only teaches the child to disobey, and find ways around it. If, on the other hand, things seem fine to you, don't assume that they're only being good while you're around. Most of the time that isn't the case, and it still shows your distrust. Eventually, stop monitoring what they do online. I believe that parental controls should only be called apon in extreme cases (and in such cases, why are you still allowing your child online anyway?), and in the case of a child who might not know better. But if that child didn't know any better, how would they know to look up pornographic sites or whatever anyway? And AoL needs to rethink what is and what isn't blocked for each age group anyway. If you block your child from the WWW, you not only keep them from viewing what you may deem morally wrong, but you also keep them away from one of the greatest learning tools ever.

Thank you for submitting your replies to the poll! We at Youth Tech appreciate your willingness to give feedback! Look out for more polls coming your way in the near future!

The BOOK: Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Devices
by muzicalone@aol.com
..........................................................................................

Thanks to BugJuicy@aol.com for helping us to rename Geek Humor! As you can see, the new title of this column is Computer Comedy.

Announcing the new Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge device (BOOK).

The BOOK is a revolutionary breakthrough in technology: No wires, no electric circuits, no batteries, nothing to be connected or switched on...

It's so easy to use even a child can operate it. Just lift its cover!
Compact and portable, it can be used anywhere-even sitting in an armchair by the fire-yet it is powerful enough to hold as much information as a CD-ROM disc. Here's how it works:

Each BOOK is constructed of sequentially numbered sheets of paper (recyclable), each capable of holding thousands of bits of information.

These pages are locked together with a custom-fit device called a binder which keeps the sheets in their correct sequence. Opaque Paper Technology (OPT) allows manufacturers to use both sides of the sheet, doubling the information density and cutting costs in half. Experts are divided on the prospects for further increases in information density; for now BOOKs with more information simply use more pages. This makes them thicker and harder to carry, and has drawn some criticism

From the mobile computing crowd.

Each sheet is scanned optically, registering information directly into your brain. A flick of the finger takes you to the next sheet. The BOOK may be taken up at any time and used by merely opening it. The BOOK never crashes and never needs rebooting, though like other display devices it can become unusable if dropped overboard. The "browse" feature allows you to move instantly to any sheet, and move forward or backward as you wish.
Many come with an "index" feature, which pinpoints the exact location of any selected information for instant retrieval.

An optional "BOOKmark" accessory allows you to open the BOOK to the exact place you left it in a previous session-even if the BOOK has been closed. BOOKmarks fit universal design standards; thus, a single BOOKmark can be used in BOOKs by various manufacturers. Conversely, numerous bookmarkers can be used in a single BOOK if the user wants to store numerous views at once. The number is limited only by the number of pages in the BOOK.

You can also make personal notes next to BOOK text entries with an optional programming tool, the Portable Erasable Nib Cryptic Intercommunication Language Stylus (Pencils).

Portable, durable, and affordable, the BOOK is being hailed as the entertainment wave of the future. The BOOK's appeal seems so certain that thousands of content creators have committed to the platform. Look for a flood of new titles soon.

This document is made from 100% recyclable electrons.
