Y O U T H T E C H N E W S For Kids and Teens, By Kids and Teens =============================================== REMEMBER THIS: (It's your key to Youth Tech!) ** Keyword: YT ** (Pull down your Go To Menu and select "Keyword".) =============================================== Saturday, June 14, 1997 Volume 2, Edition 25 Making headlines this week . . . # YT FEATURE: Putting your web page on the Internet # GEEK HUMOR: MoreTech Support Funnies # NEWSFLASH! Drop Your $.02 In & Be Heard! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YT FEATURE: Putting your web page on the Internet -- submitted by ytcc byte ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Over the course of the last several weeks, we've supplied you with tips, tricks, ideas and input on designing the most dynamic web page as possible. Hopefully you've found the information to be useful and intuitive. Now that you've created your web page, it's time to put it online. Putting your page online is as easy as 1-2-3. AOL allows members up to 2mb per screen name, with a combinded total of 10mb per account for all screen names on the account. To place your web page online, go to keyword: My Place. To upload something to 'My Place,' follow the simple instructions below: For Windows Users: 1) Go to Keyword MY PLACE, then choose UPLOAD. 2) Then in the Remote File Name field supply a name for it. Note: When uploading files to My Place and using HTML when uploading the pictures keep the exact same file name. Example: If the file that you used in your HTML was "byte.gif" use that same file name in the Remote File Name field but without the quotation marks. 3) Indentify the file type you are uploading. 4) Then click on continue. 5) Next in the Upload File window, click on the Select file button. Look around your files and find the file you need. Then double clikc on it and click on the 'Send File' button. For Macintosh Users: 1) Go to Keyword MY PLACE, then choose UPLOAD. 2) Then select a file name, example index.html then press continue and you will get a new screen. Note: When uploading files to My Place and using HTML when uploading the pictures keep the exact same file name. Example: If the file that you used in your HTML was "trek.gif " use that same file name in the Remote File Name field but without the quotation marks. 3) Click on select file and find the file you are uploading, then press OK. After that press Send File. 4) Once it is done, close the index.html window and there it is! Special Thanks to: YTCC Trek for helping out with the Mac directions. Your webpage address would be: http://members.aol.com/screenname/filename.htm. Replace where it says screenname with your screenname and you are off! (Example: http://members.aol.com/member1234/main.html) Still having problems with My Place? Tech: What's the problem? User: There is smoke coming out of the power supply. Tech: You'll need a new power supply. User: No, I don't! I just need to change the startup files. Tech: Sir, the power supply is faulty. You'll need to replace it. User: No way! Someone told me that I just needed to change the startup and it will fix the problem! All I need is for you to tell me the command. 10 minutes later, the LUser is still adamant that they are right. The tech is frustrated and fed up. Tech: Sorry, Sir. We don't normally tell our customers this, but there is an undocumented DOS command that will fix the problem. User: I knew it! Tech: Just add the line LOAD NOSMOKE.COM at the end of the CONFIG.SYS. Let me know how it goes. 10 minutes later. User: It didn't work. The power supply is still smoking. Tech: Well, what version of DOS are you using? User: MS-DOS 6.22. Tech: That's your problem there. That version of DOS didn't come with NOSMOKE. Contact Microsoft and ask them for a patch that will give you the file. Let me know how it goes. 1 hour later. User: I need a new power supply. Tech: How did you come to that conclusion? User: Well, I rang Microsoft and told him about what your said, and he started asking questions about the make of power supply. Tech: Then what did he say? User: He told me that my power supply isn't compatible with NOSMOKE. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ NEWS FLASH!
