A wonderful new feature of Windows XP is the ability to write data
CD's with no additional software! The abilities of the built-in CD
Writing ability are somewhat limited - There are no advanced settings to
control file system, multi-session vs. single session, or the ability to
do mixed-mode CD's with both data and audio.
The CD Recording feature is turned on by default, and can be disabled
if you want to use a different CD writing program.
When you insert a blank CD, you are prompted if you want to use
Windows CD Recording. If you say you do, you drag files to the CD as if it were
a hard drive, zip drive, or any other kind of removable media. Set up the
folders just like you want them to be, and put the files where you want them.
Then click the Write to CD link on the Tasks pane on the left side. Windows will
then go off and write the files and folders to the CD, and when it's done, you
have your CD.
Now, you might be asking yourself, "You said that does data
CD's, but how do I make a music CD?" The ability to make music CD's is now
built into Windows Media Player. Make a playlist in the Media Player, then you
can burn the playlist to a CD, and voila... A custom music CD!
