Have you ever had some really cool icons, then after a restart,
find that they have all changed to the generic icon for that file
type? Well, there's a very easy way to fix this, that works almost
all the time. Just restart your mac, and hold down Command-Op-
tion during startup. When startup is complete, you'll be asked if
you want to rebuild the desktop file for each disk
that is mounted
(such as external drives, or partitioned hard drives). Click ok. All
you've got to do now is wait. Once this is done, it might take
another restart to bring back the icons. Don't worry.
Why this works: On each disk, there is a desktop file, and a desk-
top database. Don't go looking for them, they are both invisible.
They contain custom icons for each file. After a while, these get
fragmented, and written over. Rebuilding it basically updates all
of the information in there.
NOTE: Apple recommends doing this at least once a month, even
if you don't notice any problems. It helps your mac run better, with
less risk of crashing.
