Applies to any version of OSX
If you're someone who uses MacOSX all the time now, it can
become very easy to forget about OS9. Since Apple has made
the Classic Environment (The part of MacOSX which allows you
to run pre-OSX applications) run extremely well, restarting in
MacOS9 seems unnecessary.
That being said, it will benefit you to restart your computer in
OS9 every now and then. There's only one real good reason for
this: Software Update. While MacOSX does have it's own Software
Update Preference Pane (the modernized, spiffy new term for Con-
trol Panel), not all updates are available in MacOSX. For example,
some of the most important updates you can get only show up when
you run Software Update in OS9. Updates such as a Firmware
update, or DVD/CDROM Firmware cannot be downloaded in OSX as
of the date this article is written. These updates are extremely
impor-
tant, and help ensure that your computer functions properly.
Another good reason to restart in OS9 just to run Software Update
is to ensure that when you're using the Classic Environment in OSX,
everything will function properly. Certain updates for OS9 help
make
sure that Classic works good in OSX, and are only available in OS9
itself.
Just a quick reminder: To restart is OS9 from OSX, launch System
Preferences, and click on Startup Disk. Choose the system folder
that contains OS9 (it makes it rather obvious), and click Restart.
To restart back in MacOSX from OS9, go to the Control Panels
folder and choose Startup Disk. Select the folder containing
MacOSX (again, it will make it rather obvious), and click Restart.
