If you've got a large
amount of RAM in your Mac, it may
take your computer a bit longer to start-up than you would
like. The delay, in this case, is before your extensions
start
to load, on the first screen you see when starting up. The
reason for this is that every time your Mac starts up, it runs
a series of internal tests on your RAM. The more RAM you
have, (especially for those of you with 512MB or more, this
can be a pretty long process) the longer these tests will
take.
While these tests are
a nice means of making sure that your
RAM is functioning, its not really necessary every time
you
start up your computer. After all, if the RAM is working fine,
almost always, it will continue to work fine. Anyway, to disable
the RAM tests at start-up, just hold down the Command and
Option keys while opening your Memory Control Panel. Under
the normal run of things, the only settings in your Memory
Control Panel are "Disk Cache", "Virtual
Memory" and "RAM
Disk". However, by holding down the Command & Option
keys
while opening the control panel, you get a new option--
"Startup Memory Tests". By default, this option isn't
visible,
and turned on all the time. Now, you can select the
"Off"
option and close the control panel. This should speed up
start-up process by a little bit.
