In programming a symbol that represents a numerical value or 
string of text used in the program.

Vaporware   

Software that has been thought up of, but has not been developed or
planned at all so if someone says that program you made is vaporware,
you have a lot of work to do.

VBX

Stands for Visual Basic eXtension, but often just called a Visual
Basic Custom control. VBXes are reusable programs, written by
other people, that you can add to your own Visual Basic or C++
programs so you don't waste time writing part of a program that
somebody has already written.

A technology that enables Internet video broadcasting and desktop

Vector Graphics

Vector graphics use computer algorithms to describe shapes, 
lines, animation, etc. The technology of vector graphics is growing
in popularity because the images are scalable and smaller in file
size, a plus for online viewing and downloading.

VGA  

Stands for video graphics array. It is a color graphics display
standard that was an improvement over its predecessors in 
color selection, resolution, and accuracy of image.

Video

The word is used loosely to describe all activities in which moving
pictures (movies) are involved.  More specifically it can refer to the
display function of your computer.

Video Adapter

An expansion card that plugs into one of your PC's expansion slots, allowing your software and your PC's monitor to talk with each other.

Video Conferencing

Conducting a conference between two or more participants at different
sites by using computer networks or the Internet to transmit audio and
video data

Video Memory

A special part of RAM in which the computer stores images displayed on the screen.

The RAM chips used to make up video memory. These are built
into high-end video adapter boards.

Virtual Machine

A software simulation of another computer.

Virtual Memory 

An option in the MEMORY Control Panel to trick your computer
into thinking it's got more RAM.  Hehe, didn't think you could trick

An oxymoron that describes a new world of computer technology
that creates a simulated multidimensional environment for the user.

Sony's Video System Control Architecture protocol, designed 
by Sony as a standard set of command codes for synchronized
computer control of multiple video peripherals.


VLB 

VESA Local Bus, which is a special type of bus to make computers
run graphics faster.


Voice Recognition 

Technology that can recognize and work with the spoken
word. It translates sound signals into digital signals that 
can be processed and analyzed by a computer.

Voice Synthesis

The opposite of voice-recognition. Here the computer is able to create
something that sounds like speech from text that it reads from a hard
or floppy disk.

Volatile Memory

Another term for RAM.


VRAM

Video Random Access Memory. A kind of high-speed memory 
used for the computer's display. VRAM must be fast to keep 
up with the speed at which the screen is scanned. The VRAM
in a PC is on a display adapter card. VRAM has two ports so it
can send the data for text and images to memory and to the
display at the same time.

VRML

It stands for 'Virtual Reality Modeling Language.' This is a type of
programming virtual reality programs. VRML is used often on high
speed and cost machines like SGI's. (Silicon Graphics, Inc.)
