Underflow

An error condition that results when a numeric value resulting from a
computation is so small that the computer cannot use it to calculate
with accuracy, or the number has more decimal places than will fit in
the field

Undernet

An internet relay chat network.

Undo

To put back it to the way it was before you messed it up. It's the command in most applications that lets you cancel the effects of whatever you just did.


Unicode

A new "universal" standard for sharing information between 
different programs and computers.

Uninstall

To remove installed software or hardware from the computer


UNIX  

An operating system using text that is used in workstations. 
Now, doesn't that just sound exciting?

UPC

Universal Product Code. The bar code commonly found on
products in retail stores, which identifies each product and 
makes it easy for the cashier to ring up its price. The code
is read into the computer by passing it over a scanner.

Upgrade

1.A newer, version of hardware or software.

2.To make a new version of a product.

3.To install a new version of hardware or software.




Upload 

To give a file to another computer.



Upper Memory Area

The 384K area of address space adjacent to the 640K of
conventional memory. Usually reserved for funning your 
system's hardware.

UPS

Uninterruptible Power Supply. A fancy term for battery backup -- an emergency supply of power in case the power coming out of the wall suddenly stops. <g>

Uptime

The time that the computer is actually working and you can get stuff done, as opposed to downtime, when the computer isn't feeling well and nothing works.


URL

 Stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is an address of a

USB

Universal Serial Bus. A personal computer bus which can support 
up to 127 peripheral devices in a daisy chain configuration, and has
a total bandwidth of 1.5 megabytes per second.


Usenet

It is bulletin boards for the Internet. Each one has a subject you
can chat about and people will respond to you.

User ID

Yes, you can get "carded" by your computer. The user ID is a number
or code word assigned to you by the system administrator or one you
make up yourself. It's used to tell the computer who you are.

 

Username

A username is like a handle for a user on the Internet and is
commonly left up to the user to decide what it is, although most
Web sites or systems will NOT allow the same username to be
assigned to two different people. Usually it's the first part of your
e-mail address before the @ sign or the nickname you use in a

Trendy marketing term supposedly implying that the software or
hardware is easy enough for even you or me to understand.


Utility

 Software intended to help you fix, tweak, or enhance your system
