Table

A way of organizing data or text into rows and columns. You don't
need good table manners for this kind of a table. This web page 
you are reading now as many tables on it. 

Tape   

A way of storing data with black, magnetic tape like a VHS tape.
This way of storing data is great for backing up, awful for a hard
disk alternative because of the time it takes to find a file.



Tape Drive   

The drive that reads tape disks.

 

Task Bar

On Computers using Windows, this is the default bar at the bottom
of your screen that contains the Start button and usually shows what

Task List  

A window that shows all the applications you have running and
enables you to switch between them.

Task Switching

When computers can multitask, the art of switching between the
running programs is called task switching.



TCP/IP  

Stands for Transfer Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol. It's
a protocol that let's you access the Internet and other net-
works on a single connection. If you connect to the Internet
via TCP/IP, then you can connect to another online service
without disconnecting from the Internet.



Telecommunications   

It's the science of talking to other remote places, connecting
remotely to other computers, and doing other stuff like that.

 

Telnet

An Internet program for connecting to a remote host or server. 
The Telnet interface is text based and a user usually has to enter 
their login name and password before gaining access to the system

I
t's a document file like a database where it is already set up for
 you and all you have to do is put in your information to make it
personalized.



Terabyte 

A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes or 1,000,000 megabytes.

 

Terminal

A device that allows you to send commands to a computer
somewhere else. At a minimum, this usually means a keyboard
and a display screen and some simple circuitry.

Text 

What you are reading RIGHT NOW! Anything that you can read 
in letters is text.



Text Editor  

A word processor, or anything of the sort. A text editor can be a 
small word processor like SimpleText or TeachText.



Text File  

A file that is universal in most text editors, word processors or
anything that can read text.



Thermal Wax Printer  

It's a technology that heats special wax paper to make an image by
actually burning it. Don't stick your hand in a Thermal Wax Printer, it
might leave you with a tatoo!



Third Party Vendor  

Any company that sells software except Apple or Microsoft.

In a USENET newsgroup, or on a Message Board it is a group

Three-Fingered Salute   

 
The key combination of Command (open Apple), Control and
Power (Reset) keys that forces your Mac to restart. It also likes
to corrupt your system, so don't give your Mac the three-fingered
salute unless you can't get it to restart.



TIFF  

Stands for Tagged Image File Format. It's a photo image format
that is bitmapped with high resolution dot images.



Tile  

A way of arranging open windows so that no windows overlap but
all windows are visible.



Title Bar  

 
The top bar of each and every window. Click and drag to move the
window to other places on the screen. Don't drag it off the screen!!



Toggle   

 Toggle means to either have something on or off. If you toggle
your monitor, that would mean you are turning it off or on.



Toner Cartridge  

A cartridge that goes inside a laser printer and the 'toner' inside of
it shoots out onto paper in tiny dots making an image.



Toolbar 

A group of icons that are arranged in an orderly fashion to allow
users easy access to commonly used functions.

Touch Screen   

A screen that, instead of using a mouse to control the pointer,
you use your finger on a pressure sensitive monitor.



Track 

On most storage media, such as floppy disks or hard drives, the
physical area on the disk that is circular. (Sort of like an old 45 rpm
record) Data is written to a disk by cross-matching a track number
and sector number.



Trackball  

A ball that rolls on top of a platform and you use it as an alternative
to a mouse.



Transfer Rate 

 
The speed a device on a computer transfers data.


Trash 

It's like your normal trashcan, except it won't get smelly (ewww)!
You can throw away old stuff you don't use anymore to make
room for new stuff. When the trashcan is bulging out, there is
stuff to throw away. Pull down your SPECIAL menu and select
EMPTY TRASH to take the trash away!


Tree Structure

A way of organizing documents on a storage device. The formation of
all the files is like a tree, you start off from the hard disk as the truck,
then the System Folder, Document folder and Application folder, then
the folders inside of those folders form something similar to a tree- a
tree keeps on going from branch to branch, and so does a hard disk
.


Trojan Horse 

A bad computer virus that plants itself in other applications so it 
strikes when you launch that application.

TrueSpeech

A Netscape Navigator plugin which allows real time audio over the Internet

TSR 

Stands for 'terminate-and-stay-resident-program.' It's an application
that is always stored in RAM so you can get quick and easy access
to it since RAM is a lot faster than any other kind of storage.



TTY

It stands for 'TeleType.' This is a way for 2 computers to connect
with each other. It is really slow and one of the most klunkiest 
ways of communicating with another computer.



TTYL

It means "talk to you later". Usually you say this when you have to get
offline or you're leaving a chat room. S

Type 1 Font

The most common and preferable format for PostScript downloadable
fonts.



Type 3 Font

A less-common PostScript outline font format that generally delivers
inferior results on laser printers.
