Nagscreen

Found in a shareware program usually when you launch or go to close a the program. It reminds the user to register and pay for the program. Sometimes designed to delay letting you move farther into the program for increasing lengths of time.

Name daemon

A UNIX process that converts hostnames to Internet addresses for TCP/IP.

NetBeui

NetBIOS Extended User Interface. A network transport protocol that adds capabilities to NetBIOS. 

NetBIOS


Network Basic Input/Output System. An applications programming interface used in conjunction with other programs to transmit messages between applications running on PCs hooked to a local area network.

Netlag

An intermittent  loss of contact by a server usually causing you connection to "lag"

Network

1 or 2 or 1000 computers all connected to exchange files with each
other.

Netscape Plugin

A third-party program that can be installed on a computer to enhance Netscape by adding multimedia or other capabilities

Network Administrator

The person that manages the software and hardware of a computer network.  Which includes maintaining files, overseeing security, setting up the network connections and more.  

Network Interface Card

An adapter board which is plugged into a computer so it can be connected to a network.  Also called a NIC

Network Latency

The delay on a network that occurs while a packet is being stored 
and forwarded.

Network Server

A central computer that stores files for a network.

Newton

A hand held computer that is great for people on the run. It can't 
do your 3D rendering for you, but it can keep a organized schedule
and it can also get your eMail among other things.

Node

It's a computer on a single network. A good example of a node is
what you used to connect to the internet. No, not your modem, the
modem and the computer on the other end.

Non Interlaced Display

A technology used in monitors.  Every line of information is sent to the screen.  The non-interlaced monitors do not flicker reducing eyestrain.

Non-Windows Application

An application that is designed to run with MS-DOS but not 
specifically with windows and that may not be able to take full
advantage of all windows features.

Non-Volatile Memory

The memory in your computer that holds information even when you
turn off your computer (whew!) Read only memory is nonvolatile, as
are disk drives.

Notebook Computer

A compact computer smaller than a laptop.

NuBus

The slots on some Macs where you can plug in special, high
priced boards to make your computer able to do something 
new. That's not why they call it NuBus though.

NUMLOCK

A key on standard PC keyboards that toggles the numeric keypad
between numbers and direction keys.
