Label Menu

The menu in MacOS that lets you choose a label for an icon.

Lag

Lag is when you're online and things are really slow because of
other online traffic.

LAN

Stands for Local Area Network. A group of computers hooked up
to each other so they can share files and printers.


Language

A specified way of using words and symbols to give the computer instructions and till it what to do.  All software is created by using a programming language.

Laptop

A small computer that can run on batteries and is small enough to
fit on your lap

Laser Printer

A printer that has a laser that puts a powder called toner onto the
paper, making an image that is then heated up and bonded to the
page.

Laser writer

A collection of laser printers made by Apple.


Latency

When reading data from memory, the number of processor cycles per bit delivered. or .The time necessary for a packet of data to travel across a network.

Launch

To open a program.

LCD

Stands for "Liquid Crystal Display". They are used more commonly in
laptop computers, but are becoming popular for desktop computers
because of their small size.


License Agreement

A legal statement which indicates the terms under which a user may make use of a software product


Light Pen

A light sensitive detector in the shape of a pen which lets you draw pictures and give input to the computer from the screen.

Line Art

Black and white drawings or graphs.

Line Feed

(1) An option on most printers that will move the paper up one line. (2)
Something that moves your cursor down to the next line on the screen.

Lines Per Inch

A measurement of how many lines there are in an inch.

Linux

A freeware form of UNIX that includes source code, for the avid
programmer.

Liquid Crystal Display

List Administrator

The person who maintains a mailing list


Listserv

An automated email discussion list

List Box

Within an application window or dialog box, a type of box that lists
available choices

Load

To transfer data from storage to memory in the computer.

Local Area Network

A group of computers hooked up to each other so they can share
files and printers.

Local Bus

A type of high-speed expansion slot for a PC, one that connects
directly with the microprocessor.


Local Drive

A disk or tape drive that is connected to one's local computer, rather than on a network.

Local Talk

The used among all the computers, printers and other devices in a
Macintosh local area network.


Log

Abbreviation for LOGarithm.  A record of a computer's or application's activity, used for system information, and recovery

Logic Board

The main board that is inside a computer. Also called a motherboard.

LOL

Stands for laughing out loud; You usually say this after someone
has said a funny statement online.


Lossless Compression

Compression methods in which no data is lost. With lossless compression, a large file can be compressed to take up less space, and then decompressed without any loss of information.


Lossy Compression

A compression technique in which a file can be highly compacted, but some data is lost.


Low Frequency

Electromagnetic frequencies in the range of 30 to 300 kilohertz


Low Resolution

On printers or computer monitors, low resolution is a mode that produces quick results but poorly drawn images that are likely to hurt your eyes and give you headaches. <g>

LPT

In MS-DOS, the name given to the parallel ports of the computer,
such as LPT1, LPT2 etc.

LPT Port

See Parallel Port.


Luminance

Brightness; the amount of light, in lumens, that is emitted by a pixel or an area of the computer screen.


Lurker

Someone who reads messages in an on-line- public forum or on-line chat but does not participate.
