K - Techie Terms

K

An abbreviation for kilobyte. This is also abbreviated KB and
consists of 1024 bytes.


Kbits/sec

Kilobits per second. Thousand bits per second.


Kb

An acronym for kilobit, or 1,024 bits -- not bytes.


KBPS

Kilobytes per second. Thousand bytes per second

Kernel

A very important part to an operating system. The kernel is the first
thing loaded into memory and stays there the whole time while your
computer is on, as it manages the memory, task, and disk.


Kerning

The art of adjusting the spacing between letters so that they look nice together.  Certain letters look better closer together than others.  For example T and y can fit snuggly together so that the upper part of the T hangs slightly over the y.  Kerning is used most often in word processors and desktop publishing programs.

Key

(1) One of many buttons on your keyboard. (2) The word used to describe that particular "something" you search for in a database.
(3) Another word for password; many programs require keys before
you can use it.

Keyboard

The hardware which is used to enter to text the screen. Most
keyboards are relatively the same, with only slight variations.

Keyboard Shortcut

A combination of keys that will make your computer do a 
particular task. Example: A menu shortcut as CTRL+N will
create a new document in AOL.

Keypad

A related group of keys placed together for convenience. The most common keypads are the numeric keypad and cursor keypad.


Keyword

1.A word in a programming language that has a strictly defined meaning, such as goto, if, then, else. These words must be used only in the specific sense defined in the language.

2 .A word used in a search, for example, to find World Wide Web documents relating to a particular subject.  On AOL you can hit CTRL-K and type in a keyword to get to many different areas.  Youth Tech's AOL Keywords are Youth Tech and YT.


KHZ

Kilohertz. Thousand cycles per second.


Kick

To banish someone from an IRC channel, usually in response to bad behavior on the channel such as flooding. Only a channel op can kick
a user


Kilobit

1024 bits.  A unit of measurement of the capacity of memory integrated circuits. Not to be confused with kilobyte

Kilobyte

1024 bytes of data. Abbreviated K or KB.


Korn Shell

ksh    A command interpreter for UNIX.

 

Kuppo

A nice way of saying "hi" on the Information Super Highway. So, 
next time you need something original to say to someone, say
"kuppo".
