Game Port

A socket where a joystick can be attached for gaming

 

Gatekeeper

A set of Macintosh system extensions and control panels which offer protection against viruses


GateWay

A link from one online service that lets you exchange mail and 
interact with another online service.


GDI

Graphical Device Interface or Graphics Device Interface. The system by which graphics are displayed in Microsoft Windows. The application in use sends GDI the parameters for the image to be represented. GDI produces the image by sending commands to the monitor, printer, or other output device. 

 

GEDCOM

GEnealogical Data COMmunication. A common file format used to exchange computerized genealogical data between different genealogy programs

Geek

A computer geek is someone who is socially inept but expert with
computers. 

 

Generic Markup

A method of marking up a document to indicate its logical components, such as paragraphs, headers or footnotes

 

Ghosting

The term for what happens when an image is dragged across a computer screen leaving a shadow of the image where it was before

GIF

Stands for Graphics Interchange File. An image format developed
by CompuServe so it is compatible with most computers so they can
see the image.

GIF Converter

A Mac shareware utility that can be used to view and modify GIF files

GIG

Short for gigabyte.


Gigabit Ethernet

A standard for a high-speed Ethernet, approved by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.3z standards committee in 1996.


Gigabyte

1024 megabytes.

 

GIPS

Giga-Instructions per Second.

A measurement of the speed at which a processor executes instructions

 

GIS

Geographic Information System

.A computer system that has maps and geographic information, and sometimes analyses of geographic data


Glitch

A problem that causes a program to work erratically or not at all.

Worldwide, or throughout an entire file, program or system

GMT

Greenwich Mean Time.

The mean solar time of the meridian of Greenwich, England, used as the basis for calculating standard time throughout the world

Liquid image editing program from MetaTools, this program uses
advanced technology at a low price. Plus it is an extremely cool
program.


GPF

GPF stands for General Protection Fault. A GPF is an error that occurs on Windows systems when a program attempts to use
memory that hasn't been assigned to it. This activity causes the
program to become unstable, and that unstable condition 
generates the error.

 

GPS

Global Positioning System.

A system of satellites that transmit continually, which make it possible to identify earth locations through a receiving unit, by triangulation


Gradient

A shade that slowly shades into another color.

 

Graph

A picture that can give you a summary of a collection of information. Mainly used for statistical or mathematical information. A graph can reveal trends that would be harder to recognize by just looking at numbers

 

Graphical User Interface

An interface that has pictures as well as words on the screen
(Usually called GUI).


Graphics Adapter Card

A circuit board that plugs into a computer so that the monitor will have
something to plug into. The common graphics adapter cards for IBM
compatible computers include CGA, EGA, and VGA

Grayscale

A picture or screen that's colors are grays.

 


Greenwich Mean Time

Gregorian Calendar

The calendar used in most countries of the world, which has 12 months and 365 days a year with the exception of leap years.

GUI

Graphical User Interface. An interface that has pictures as well as words on the screen. Originally invented by Xerox, the idea was expanded and popularized by Apple Computers.

 

 


Guru

A smart dude that is really good with computers and can answer
almost any computer question thrown at him or her.
