E - Techie Terms

.edu

The domain ending of any educational institute. For example:
utexas.edu. This suffix is used on the internet for E-Mail addresses,
FTP sites and other parts of the internet. example: utexas.edu. 

 

 

E-Mail

Stands for "electronic mail". It is mail that you read through your
computer. It is a very fast way to communicate opposed to the old
hand written letter that goes through the postal service; nicknamed
"snail mail" . You can send a piece of E-Mail and it will reach it's
destination usually within 15 seconds (more or less). 

 

 

e-scam

A scam, or fraud, carried out by using the means of electronic communications.  An example would be many of the get rich quick schemes you see posted on message boards or receive in your e-mail.

 

 


Easter EGG 

A hidden surprise in a program or on a web site.  A special feature
that is not otherwise made obvious     Programmers often "bury" 
easter eggs in their programs to add a certain extra depth to their
program or Web site and to challenge users to find it. 

 

 

Easy Access

A program that comes with Macs that allows you to control the
pointer through the keyboard. 

 

 

EBCDIC

Stands for 'Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code'.
It's a way that your computer interprets different characters as
numbers. ASCII is a lot easier system than EBCDIC so that's
why ASCII is used more largely in PCs and Macs. 

 

 

E-Commerce 

Quite simply it means conducting business online. In the traditional
sense of selling goods, it is possible to do this electronically because
of certain software programs that run the main functions of an
e-commerce Web site, such as product display, online ordering, and
inventory management. 

 

 

Echo Cancellation

Removing unwanted echoes from the signal on a telephone line. 

 

 

ECM

Error Correcting Memory.
RAM which includes error detection and correction circuits. 

 

 

ECPA

Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
A law which prohibits phone tapping, interception of email, and other privacy violations except under special law enforcement situations usually requiring a warrant. 

 

 

Editor

A program used to write and edit HTML code.  

 

 

EDO DRAM

Extended Data Out Dynamic Random Access Memory.
A fast dynamic RAM chip that is often used with Pentium processors

 

 

EDO RAM

Extended Data Out Random Access Memory.
A memory chip, used mostly with Pentium processors, that accesses data faster by overlapping cycles of data output 

 

 

EDU

A type of Internet domain assigned to URLs which are university or
other educational institutions. 

 

 

EGA

A display system, now nonexistent, which was introduced in the early
1980's by IBM. EGA was capable of using 16 different colors on the
screen at once, which isn't very good compared to today's type of
display specs. 

 

 

EGP

Exterior Gateway Protocol.
A protocol which gives TCP/IP routing information to a network's exterior gateways: the routers that connect the network to other independent networks. 

 

 

Electrode

A device that collects or emits electric charge and controls the movement of electrons 

 

 

E-mall

This is like the shopping mall you visit in your town except you can visit it without ever leaving your house.., an emall is a group of lots of online  stores all in one place 

 

 

Embedded Command

.A command written within text or lines of code 

 

 

Embedded Hyperlink 

A hyperlink that is incorporated into a line of text. 

 

 

Embedded Object

An object that was created in one particular program that can be
placed into a new program, such as a word processor document,
and it still will remain the same. An example would be adding a .
wav file made in Sound Recorder into a text document made in
Microsoft Word. 

 

 

Encipher

To encrypt data for privacy 

 

 

Emoticon

A picture created using ASCII to express a variety of different
emotions. These are often referred to as smileys, and YTCCs
mysteriously seem to over-use them. Examples: :P :) :/ :X :O) ;-)

EMS

Expanded Memory Specification.
A way of expanding DOS Random Access Memory from one megabyte to 32 megabytes. 

 

 

Emulator

A hardware or software device that performs like something else 

 

 

Encryption

Implementing a code or password in a Web Page, E-Mail, or
other document so that it is secure. Often used to keep credit
card numbers safe in transactions on the web. 

 

 

End User

The person who will ultimately use a product, as compared to all the people involved with creating and developing it.  Usually meaning the consumer. 

 

 

Energy Star

A standard developed by the Environmental Protection Agency to designate computer equipment that will reduce power when not being used.  For example, an Energy Star monitor will require less electricity if the user doesn't touch the mouse or keyboard after a certain period of time.  Energy Star monitors must consume less than 30 watts of power when not in use. 

 

 

Eniac

Electronic Numerical Integrator Analyzer and Computer.

The first digital electronic computer, developed by John Mauchly and J.Presper Eckert during World War II at the University of Pennsylvania and released in 1946.   it's main use was for scientific research and weather forecasting. 

 

 

Enterprise Network

A network that usually would comprise of a number of local area networks, which then have to interface with each other as well as a central database management system and many a varied amount of client workstations.  The design and management of an enterprise network can be very complex and therefore has become less popular in recent years.  

 

 

Environment

What conditions programs on your computer run under. The type
of operating system you use is a big part to the environment of your
computer, but also the many options you can control and change
make up the environment. 

 

 

Environment Variable

Environment information such as a drive, path, or filename,
associated with a symbolic name that can be used by MS-DOS.
You use the MS-DOS set command to define environment variables. 

 

 

EO

The abbreviation for "Erasable Optical Disk", an optical disk that
can be erased so that new information can be stored on it. 

 

 

EOF

The condition in a computer program reached when all the data in
a file has been processed, also a key that is used to mark the end
of a file. 

 

 

EPT Port

A port requiring a special card and software. Only certain printers,
such as the IBM Personal Pageprinter, use this port. 

 

 

Equalizer

A device which can boost or cut specific frequencies, to compensate
for loss and distortion in signal transmission 

 

 

Ergonomics

The science of designing working environments and the tools in them
for maximum work efficiency and maximum worker health and safety. 

 

 

Ethernet

The most popular type of local area network, which sends its
communications through radio frequency signals carried by a
coaxial cable 

 

 

Ethernet Address

The physical address of an Ethernet controller board, expressed as a 48-bit number in hexadecimal notation 

 

 

Even Parity

A form of error checking in which a parity bit of 1 is added when there is an even number of 1 bits in the byte 

 

 

Event

A type of program on your computer that detects input from
hardware devices such as the movement of the mouse, push
of a key on a keyboard, and information fed through the modem.
Most events are performed by the computer user. 

 

 

Exclusive Application

A non Windows application that has the sole use of the computer's
resources while it is the active application and Windows in running
in 386 enhanced mode. 

 

 

Execute

Very simply, execute means to run, or perform something. While
on your computer, you're constantly executing things. 

 

 

Expand

An option in a file manager, that can be used to show hidden
directory levels in the directory tree. 

 

 

Expanded Memory

Memory in addition to conventional memory that some non-Windows
applications use. Expanded memory is an older standard being
replaced with extended memory. 

 

 

Extended Memory

Memory beyond 1 megabyte (MB) in 386 and 486 computers.
Windows uses extended memory to manage and run applications. 

 

 

Extended Memory Manager

 A program that prevents different applications from using the
same part of extended memory at the same time. 

 

 

Extension

(1) The type of information found in a specific file is usually found out
by the three letters at the end of the file name preceded by a dot. (2)
An added resource used by certain applications and parts of the
system (Macintosh). 

 

 

EZDrive

EZdrives are similar to Jaz drives and Zip drives but can hold 135
megs and can be used as a hard drive.
