Question:

After using long filenames in Win95...I make my backups...reformat the machine using the same software cd(s)/floppies. To my horror all my downloaded files have got TRUNCATED!!

1]What did I do wrong?
2]What's the solution?

Answer:

It is obvious the error occured because you used a DOS program to backup your Win95 files, when DOS only reads 8 character files. As you know, Win95 can read up to 256 character file names. An easy solution would be to just rename the downloaded files to something you know what program it is for. For example, if you remember you had a .wav file called CoolSoundByte.wav you're going to have to find it's less-letter file name and rename it back to the original. You will have to rename all the files you want unless they will stay truncated! It may take some effort, but if you really want those files it should be worth it. Remember next time to try and use a Win95 program to back up Win95 oriented files, it will save you time in the future.
