Question:

I have a 486/DX4-100MHz comp. w/ 20 megs of RAM, and a total of 2 GIGs storage space, 33.6K voice/data/fax modem, and running WIN95...I am trying to install IE 4.0, but locks up after the licensing agreement or causes a GPF-type failure. What's the problem with it? Is it my hardware or is it IE4?

Answer:

Where the problem lies depends on what the setup program is causing an error in. Next time you get the error, click the DETAILS button. This will expand the window to show more information about the error. The error will look something like:

IE4SETUP caused an <error type> in module <filename> at.....

What you care about here is the Module file name. If it shows IE4SETUP, or the same thing as the first word in the message, then it's a problem with the program. If the module is USER, GDI, KERNEL32, or EXPLORER, then the problem could be Windows. However, your video driver or sound card could also be causing a problem, so if the module says something that looks like one of those, then there's your problem.
