Question:

A friend of mine gave me an external modem. It is an AT&T brand..52K I believe...I have an internal 14.4 now and I do not know how to hook up this modem. He just gave me the
modem (no cables, etc.). Do I need a board or something?

Answer:

To make the modem work, and get it hooked up to your computer, you'll need the power adapter and a serial cable to go between the modem and your computer. Every computer has at least one serial port, which can be identified as a 9 pin port that has 5 pins on the top and 4 on the bottom. Some computers have two ports that look like this, and some older models have a second serial port that is 25 pins instead. These ports are usually COM1 and COM2 in your system. After it is hooked up, start your computer. When Win95 is done loading, click the Start button, point to Settings, then click on Control Panel. In the window that appears, double-click on Add New Hardware. This will start a wizard to install the modem. When the wizard asks if it can find any new devices, say No. This will take you to a screen that lists all kinds of devices that can be added. Click on Modem, then click Next. This should start the Add Modem wizard, which will check your serial ports for your modem, and install the right driver.

Because the modem is a newer 56k modem, you may want to visit AT&T's web site to see if there are new drivers for it, and install these when prompted. 56k is a developing technology, so there may be new drivers to meet new standards.
