I have a high speed 56K modem. How come I can't connect at 56k bits per second?
Answer:
There could be several reasons for this. First, the phone equipment that all phone companies use are only cleared to work at 53k bits per second. This is because of an FCC regulation. Second, not all phone lines have the quality that a 56k modem needs to connect at a high speed. Line noise is the main cause for the lack of quality. Unfortunately, there is usually nothing that you can do about the line noise.
