One of the many advantages to having a network is that
users are able to share files and access one or more printers. Setting
up file sharing and printer sharing is rather simple. Below are links
for tutorials on setting up file/print sharing on Windows98SE. Also, please keep in mind that when a
computer is setup for file sharing, contracted viruses are able to
spread via the network. It's always a good idea to have an up-to-date
virus scanner loaded on your computer.
Windows98(SE)/Windows 95
To enable file sharing you'll need to have your Windows
98/95 CD handy.
1. Open your
control panel. Do this by going to Start > Settings > Control
Panel
2.
Once you're in the Control Panel, open the Network panel by
double clicking on it.
3. Once you've opened
the network control panel (left), click the Identification tab at
the top middle. For computer name, enter the name you want your
computer to appear as on your network. Enter a workgroup name.
(note: all computers on the network must share the
exact same workgroup name in order to access files.)
Enter a brief computer description if you desire (ie: desktop in
living room)
4. Now go back to the
Configuration tab. Click on the File and Print Sharing button.
5. A window should
popup titled File and Print Sharing (left). Check either box, or
both you'd like to enable on your computer.
6. Once you've
made your selection, click OK. Windows will begin to assemble the
necessary files to enable file and/or print sharing.
7. You will most
likely need to insert your Windows 98 CD. Once the CD is in the
drive, Click OK.
8. Windows will copy
the needed files from CD. Once completed, you'll be prompted to
Restart your computer.
9. Once your system is finished rebooting, you'll
be able to share drives, folders and/or a printer.
