Modern Assembly Line - 1913

At the time of the industrial boom, during the early 1900's, machine use was in
great demand! From the discovery of electricity, to the use of steam powered
engines and discovery of flight - all added fuel to the fire!  However, the true
start of the Modern Assembly Line formed within the mind of Henry Ford. Cars
were just finally beginning to catch on in the United States and were beginning
to come in to great demand. Ford had found it hard to find good, reliable labor,
and to be able to pay them the amount of money he earned.  (before the first
assembly line was invented, the method of hiring 6 or 7 skilled workmen to
build one car together was what they did).  However, Ford had a better idea.
It would be cheaper, quicker, and less hassle to hire about 60 people all with
special jobs. These workmen were unskilled, paid much less, and very easy to
replace if something came up. The idea was one would put the tire on the axle,
another would screw on the bolts, one would screw in a headlight, and another
would attach the lens. With these unskilled jobs and cheap labor, producing
cars was faster than ever! So thus was born the modern assembly line. Today,
most everything produced is made on a line - toys, cars, planes, even CD
factories have assembly lines; they have people who put the CD's in their
cases. Where would we be without the Modern Assembly Line? Probably far
behind with what we have now.
