Windows XP

Using Safe Mode to Troubleshoot

Before beginning this tutorial please understand it is designed for use ONLY with Windows XP and ONLY if there is a current problem which interferes with the normal operation of Windows.

Editing Startup Programs

We'll first remove any programs from the Startup Folder. To do this,

1) Right Click the Start button and select Explore.

2) The explore window will appear with the Start Menu already selected.

3) Expand the Programs Folder then Locate and Expand the Startup Folder.

4) If there are items in this folder you'll want to move them so they do not startup automatically - this will help us troubleshoot. Create another new folder either on your desktop or in the c drive - call it something you'll remember. In this case we'll call it StartupBak. Select all the icons in the Startup Folder and either drag & drop them into StartupBak or on the edit menu select > Select All > Cut. Open the StartupBak folder and on the edit menu press Paste.

5) Next we're going to scroll up in the left pane with the list of folders to All Users. Expand this folder. Click on Start Menu so it expands. Scroll down to the Startup folder and if there are any icons in it create ANOTHER folder on either your Desktop or C drive. Let's call this one AllStartupBak. Drag & Drop or use the Edit menu to move the files from Startup to AllStartupBak.

6) Now that all the programs have been removed from the startup folders, restart into normal mode and once again test for errors.
