Windows XP Control Panel

Task Bar and Start Menu page 3

Start Menu Tab Continued: default start menu - customize advanced: Under the Advanced tab you can choose to have submenus open
when you pause on them or not, and you can also have windows
highlight newly installed programs. You can also choose which windows
components to show on your start menu and whether you want your most recently opened documents listed.  This is also where you can clear that list periodically if you choose.  Don't be afraid to play around with different
settings to find the ones  you like best, you can't hurt anything. <g>

Thankfully... if you don't like the windows XP start menu, you can easily go back to the classic look.  You can also customize this start menu, though not quite as much as the XP menu.
