Windows XP Control Panel

Task Bar and Start Menu:  Customize the start menu and task bar, such as the types of items to be displayed and how they should appear.

Taskbar tab: Here you can change different settings for how your taskbar looks and performs.  You will notice that the graphic above each section will change to reflect each new change you make, making it easy to see how  your choices will effect the taskbar.  For the Taskbar appearance you can choose whether you want to lock the taskbar, have the taskbar auto hid so that it only comes up when you put your mouse cursor over it, and a few other options. You can check and uncheck the boxes until you find what works best for you.  You can also change a couple of options in the Notification area as shown by the graphic.  For example if you don't want your clock to show, uncheck the box.  Windows XP also has it by default where your inactive icons are hidden out of site until you click on the arrow, if you don't like this feature... uncheck the box.

Click on the Customize button to be able to change how windows displays notification icons.  Simply select the notification you wish to change and then choose it's notification behavior. An example would be: the little mail icon that we are used to seeing when we have new unopened mail, by default windows XP will hide this when it's inactive, if you want it to show all the time simply change it here.
