Windows XP Control Panel

Display Properties

Screen Saver Tab: From this tab you may customize your Screen Saver options.

Like Backgrounds, Windows comes with a list of pre-loaded screen savers. To view them, simply click the drop-down menu and scroll through the list. Select a screen saver by clicking on it in the list. A preview will then appear in the monitor above. Or, to view it at full screen just click the Preview button and move your mouse to go back. You can customize each screen saver by clicking the Settings button to the right of the drop down list. Each screen saver has many different options so don't hesitate to try them all out.

You may also set the amount of time for Windows to wait before turning on your screen saver. This means the computer won't have a screen saver until X amount of time has elapsed and the computer hasn't been used.

Also on this tab are the Power Settings (Known as Energy Star). To customize, click the Power.. Button.

The first tab of the Power settings, Power Schemes allows you to customize your energy settings best to your computer usage. The first drop down is a list of Preset Schemes used for various energy settings (Laptop, Always On, Desktop, etc). You can either select from this list or select your own settings.

You can choose when to have your Monitor automatically turn off as well as your Hard Disks. You may also choose to have your computer automatically go into standby or hibernate after it hasn't been used for X amount of time.

The Power Settings - Advanced Tab allow for a few more options such as displaying the Power Settings icon in the Tray (Taskbar), Asking for a password when the computer comes out of Standby and changing your Power Button settings. The Hibernate tab allows you to activate and deactivate the feature and explains briefly what it does. The UPS tab is used if you own an Uninterruptible Power Supply to customize various settings once main power is gone.
