Customizing Your Windows XP
Start Menu Part 4
by Bill C.

After you have finished in the General screen, click on the tab labeled “Advanced”. Here, you may select a number of advanced options. See below for an example..

The first option given is “Open submenus when I pause on them with my mouse”.  This option will allow you to set whether you need to click on a submenu item, or if it will open automatically when you hold your mouse over it for one second.  The second option is “Highlight Newly Installed Programs”.  This option will help you find the Start Menu items for newly installed programs.  This highlighting will remain in place until you’ve used the item a few times.

In the Start Menu items, you can set a list of options, such as making your Control Panel, My Computer, My Documents, Recent Documents, Network Connections, Favorites, Help and Support, and others.  Some of these items have multiple options.   You can either set them to display as a submenu, display as a link (click on it and it takes you there), or not display at all.

Under the last section, you can decide whether you want your most recent documents shown on your start menu.  You do not have to open these files directly from the start menu for them to appear in the Recent Documents submenu.  The menu will list all documents opened from within programs as well.

Now that we’re all done, you can go ahead and click the OK button on the window you’re currently in to save your changes.  In the next window, you’ll also want to click OK to save your changes there.  Now you’re done!
