In this article, we’ll go over
customizing your Windows XP Start Menu. You’ll learn how to most
effectively use and set up your Start Menu.
First, let’s take a look at the Start Menu
Above is a screen capture of a sample start menu. Yes, this is
actually my start menu, but it’ll serve well as an example.
You’ll see under my Start Menu List, I have a list of programs
there. These are the most frequently used programs on my laptop.
I have put them there for quick and easy access. To add a
program to your Start Menu List, simply locate the icon of the
program you would like to add, right click on that icon, and
choose “Pin to Start Menu”. That will place the program in the
lowest spot in that list. To move items around in this list,
simply click and hold on the item you would like to move, and
then drag the item up or down the list. You can also rename
your Start Menu List items to make them easier to read. To do
so, right click on an item in your Start Menu list and choose
Rename. Type the name you would like the icon to have, and hit
Enter.
The second section of your Start Menu
is the Recent Programs List. Windows will automatically place
your most recently used programs to this list. You can set the
number of items that will appear in this list in the Start Menu
properties, but we’ll get to that in a little bit.
