Windows 95/98 - How to

Find Files or Folders

The Find Files or Folders option in Windows 95, 98 and 98SE is a very useful feature. Once you've read these tips and tricks, you should become more efficient and comfortable while using this powerful tool. The Find Files or Folders tool has a few features and options you may not even be aware of, or know how to use.

1. To access the Find Files or Folders feature, Click Start then navigate to Find > Find Files or Folders. Tip: You can also press the Windows button (usually between CTRL and ALT on the left of your keyboard) and then the F key to open the Find feature. Windows Key + F
2. The Find Files or Folders window will open. The Named field is for file or folder names. The Containing text field is used to search for text within a file and the Look in option is used to select which folder or drive to look in. Be sure the Include Subfolders box is checked so the program scans all the folders. You can also click browse to narrow down the search to a specific location.
3. The Date tab is used to narrow a search. From this tab you can select to search between certain dates. This is helpful if you know you created, modified or last accessed a file between given dates. Just select find all files (and the option in the drop down menu most appropriate), select the between option and enter the two dates. You can also choose to search for files that were modifies, created or last accessed during x amount of months or x amount of days.
4. The Advanced Tab has even more options to assist in locating a file. The Of type drop down box allows you to select a specific file type from a large list. You can also select to search by file size. Either by: at least or at most then the number of KB you select. Note that 1024 KB is equal to 1 Megabyte.
5. You'll also notice the Find Files or Folders, just like most programs, has a menu bar at the top with File, Edit, View, Options and Help. Although all are useful, the most significant in your file searches may be the Options menu. From this small menu you can select to search by CaSe SeNsItIvItY. This means the name you enter must be the correct capitalization in order for it to return any results. You may also elect to save your results.
