The easiest way to manage
your windows desktop is to use the desktop
shortcut menus. It's as simple as right clicking on any
open area of your
desktop. Open area meaning not on the taskbar or icons.
The shortcut
menu contains commands which enable you to customize the look
and
feel of your win 98 desktop.
When you right click on an empty space on your
desktop a little menu will pop up that should look
much like the figure to the left. From this
menu
you can manipulate how windows will look and
feel on your computer. You can set desktop
themes, activate and change a screensaver,
and much more. Below is a simple overview of
what each item on the menu does.
Active Desktop: Move
your mouse cursor over Active Desktop in the menu and a
submenu will pop up. The view as web page command will
turn the active desktop on and off. Open the display
properties dialog box with the customize my desktop command
and
Update the Active Desktop with the Update now command.
Arrange Icons:
Enables you to arrange the desktop icons by Name, by Type,
by Size, or by Date, or you can use Auto
Arrange to let Windows 98 decide how to arrange them.
Line Up Icons:
Arranges the icons by name, in alphabetical order, into neat
columns and rows on the desktop.
Refresh: Updates icons
and Active Desktop items displayed
on the desktop.
Paste: Creates a
shortcut to whatever document you are
currently working on and pastes it's icon onto the desktop.
Paste Shortcut: Pastes
whatever shortcut you've cut or
copied to the clipboard onto your desktop.
New: Holding your mouse
cursor over New will pop up a sub
menu
where you can choose to create a new folder, a file of
a
certain
type such as a word document, or a new shortcut.
Properties: Opens the
Display Properties dialog box, where you
can change display stuff, like windows color combinations,
your resolution settings and more.
