Frequently Asked Questions About Using IRC

Please note the answers to these questions apply to the Youth Tech Chat Shack.
Many of them are channel specific and will not apply on other servers
.

  • How do I change my nickname?
    To change your nickname, type
    /nick newnick  Example: /nick ralph

  • How do I register my Nick
It is not necessary to register your nick to use Youth Tech. No
passwords to remember that way <g>

  • Why do I see an @ in front of some peoples names at times?
People with an @ in front of their name are your hosts. Usually they
will have a YTCCName. They are there to help you should you have
any problems and to make your chat experience more fun.

  • How do I Quit IRC when I am done chatting?
The easiest way to end your IRC session is by simply typing /quit

  • What is the PING?PONG! I keep seeing in my status window?
The Ping Pong you see is the result of the server pinging you to see
if you are still on the system. You need make no response, your IRC
program does it automatically. Visible Ping!Pong!s usually occur when
there is lots of lag or a bad connection to the server.

  •  How can I talk privately to just one person?
/MSG Silly How are you today?  Sends a (private) message to
Nickname silly asking how they are today.  In most chat clients
this will pop up in a separate window similar to an Instant Message
    on AOL.
(Note you will not get the pop up box until they respond to you.)

  •  How can I open a private message without waiting for a response?
/QUERY Silly   Will force open a private message box that you can then
type your message in to Nickname Silly.  You would replace Silly with
the nick of the person you want to talk privately with.

  • Can I say something to just one person in the room?
/NOTICE Silly How are you today?   Would send the question how are
you today to the chatroom but only Silly would be able to see it.  You
should be very careful when using the notice command or you may
send something to the whole room you intended for one person.

  • How can I ignore someone who is bothering me?
You can ignore someone simply by typing /ignore nickname
Replacing nickname with the persons nick that you wish to ignore.
